Project description:

The ERG is working with the EAHA and the Regional Local Government and Social Housing Group Charter, comprising of 13 member councils, to apply Knox City Council’s Housing Needs analysis methodology region-wide to understand and quantify specific local housing needs.

The minimum supply methodology developed by Knox has been applied across the ERG and the broader 13-Council Charter group. The estimated shortfall in social housing of 9360 dwellings in 2021 is expected to increase to 13,540 dwellings in 2041.

Work is also being undertaken to facilitate site identification and opportunities for social housing in areas of greatest need.

The ERG and its partners will advocate for mandatory contributions towards affordable and social housing though mechanisms such as Inclusionary Zoning. Recently, the levy for social housing, and subsequent rates exemption for local government, was abandoned by the State Government follows calls from councils, including ERG councils, and local government authorities – click here for details
