Project description:

Development of the Eastern Region Land Use Framework was led by DELWP, now the Department of Transport and Planning.

DTP has been working with local councils since 2017 to develop Melbourne’s Future Planning Framework, including six draft land use framework plans for the Melbourne Metropolitan Regions, including for Melbourne’s east. The Framework Plans are a Plan Melbourne 2017-2050 implementation action and are intended to help guide how growth, jobs, housing, infrastructure, major transport improvements and open space are managed at a regional level over the next 30 years.

ERG Councils have supported the Framework development process, recognising the need for longer-term regional planning informed by Council Plans, and a coordinated approach across Departments and levels of government for effective implementation.

The early draft Framework was updated following the decision to develop the suburban rail loop. The planning reforms and Housing Statement announced in September 2023 included a decision to develop a Plan for Victoria, leaving the Framework Plans in draft.

The ERG will continue to advocate for long-term integrated planning for the future communities of the region.
